The source of River Yamuna, Yamnotri is a sacred shrine housing the temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is one of the famous "Chardhams" or four pilgrimage destinations. Located in Uttarakhand and at an altitude of 3235 metres, the shrine is situated atop mountains known as "Bandar poonch”. Anther popular attraction is its holy thermal springs located at Jankijatti, 7 km. away.

According to mythology, the Ancient Hindu sage Asti Muni used to visit Gangotri to take holy bath and when he was unable to do so owing to old age, a stream of water appeared divinely opposite the Yamnotri. The actual source is the Champasagar -a frozen glacier located atop Kalind Mountains 4423 meters above sea level. It is however not visited by devotees due to the excessively rough 1 km. trek that is required to reach to it. Hence, prayers are offered at the temple located at its foot.

Located on the left bank of Yamnua is the sacred temple of Yamuna which was constructed by Maharana Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal and the temples deity is made of Black Marble. Gushing out of the mountains nearby are the hot water springs, including the most popular Suryakund. Devotees prepare rice offering by dipping them in the hot water springs which they take home as "Prasad".

-: Must-Visit at Yamunotri :-

Divya shila: A rock pillar located near Surya Kund at Yamunotri 3000 meters above sea level, the visitors first worship here before entering the temple.suryakund

Surya kund: A collection of thermal springs located close to the Yamunatri temple flowing into numerous pools. Surya kund with a temperature of 190 degrees is the most sacred springs and also famous for its remedial properties.

Janki Chatti: Another thermal spring located at a distance of 5 km from Yamnotri where devotees take holy bath.

Hanumanchatti: Located 13 km from Yamunatri, Hanumanchatti is the starting point of the 3,300m trek to Dodi tal. Ponies or porters may be hired to reach to the spot.

Sayanachatti: Located along the banks of river Yamuna is sayanachatti, a beautiful spot which makes for an ideal stopover enroute Yamunatri located further 18km.upwards.

-: Best Time To Visit :-

The months between May-June and September-November are considered the best for visiting Yamunotri. The monsoon season extending from late June to August witness heavy rainfall making it very difficult for devotees to reach to it. The temple remains open from April to 2nd week of November.yamunotri-climate

Summers are cooler during the day and cold at night. Winters brings snowfalls with temperature falling below zero.

By Air: The Jolly grant airport, Dehradun at a distance of 196 km. is well connected to all major cities nearby.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is Dehradun, located 172 km away from Yamunotri which is well connected to the rest of India.

By Road: The local bus station is at Hanuman Chatti, 14 km away from the Yamunotri where both public as well as private Bus services
